Horse

I'm wondering if the horse that fell in the equestrian steeple chasing scene was real. In some countries there are no animal regulations for film. Sometimes trip wires are used to show horses falling.
I like to check the American Humane film ratings where a film will get approval and state "no animals were harmed in the filming..." but I'm not sure about foreign films.
Here is the film rating website: http://www.americanhumane.org/protecting-animals/programs/no-animals-were-harmed/recently-released-movies.html

From the director:
"We were shooting during the French championship, shooting some real riders, and this accident just happened. As soon as we saw the horse fall, we turned off the cameras. I called him [the rider] after, because, you know, I was a rider for a while, and I knew him very well. And I said, “Do you mind if I use it?” And he said, “No, use it.” The idea was, I wanted to have the metaphor of the horse touching the bar, not falling but losing. But when I saw the accident, I thought it was more powerful, for sure."

I do showjumping with my horses and there is no way you could stage that kind of accident! I was interested too since it was quite a crash.

Thank you for your response. I'm guessing the horse didn't make it :( From an artistic perspective I understand using the footage.
