The details were fantastic

Watched this for the first time last night, but I've been rewatching certain scenes, and I'm just impressed by all the details and minor characters.

- The head detective having OCD.

- Alex and his sister having a bad relationship.

- Alex and his sister's wife having a good relationship.

- A lot of major plot points and characters were introduced in passing before we realized how important they were.

The minor characters:

- The washed up lawyer Ferrault.

- The creepy torture-expert woman. (Even though it was a bit of a trick, I really enjoyed the 3-second fakeout making us believe she was some kind of alien before she collapsed along with the supernatural element.)

- Maybe not so minor, but Bruno. His character could've easily been a terrible idea, but it was pulled off really well.

Great movie. Finding more and more I like about it.

also, it's one of the rare occasions where the film far exceeds the book
I loved the book and there's no doubt that this is a terrific adaption. Trust the French to do it right.

I agree with LTUM, it's definitely one of the best movies from the past 10 years with "The Next 3 Days" as a close # 2.
But if I wouldn't have read the other threads here in the imdb, the thought that François Cluvet resembles Dustin Hoffman never would have entered my mind.
Cluzet looks very French.

The minor characters:
That lovely quick snapshot of the detective and his partner at his mother's place. It just enhances the detective's character so much.

The dog featured throughout. I loved the part where Helene hands him the leash, while crossing the street to get lit up.

I agree, the writing in this movie was fantastic. I was completely envious of the scripwriting... all those major details alluded to early on only to be revealed bit by bit.

Also I don't know if I should have spotted this earlier... but I didn't realize why the title of email the wife sent to Alex had such an impact on him until I noticed MA/////////////// was what was written on the tree, obviously standing for Margot and Alex and the / representing the number of years they'd known each other. Just another nice little touch.

This is definitely one of my favorite thrillers of the past decade, tied with The Secret in their eyes.

Not to mention it has one of the best foot pursuit scene in the movie history. Starting of jumping out of the window and end in the garbage bin.

I know. And that stunt with the van? How cool was that??

That was actually Francois Cluzet, literally inches from the van

What a moment
