Yeah, they showed them both as preteen kids around 9 yet the guy clearly looks 15-20 years older than the girl.

The actors are 15 years apart in real life, but that doesn't mean much.
As far as the characters they played are concerned, it could simply be that he looks older than he is and she looks younger than she is.
