I've never understood this seeing as Scary movie 1 and 2 were their biggest hits and the series is still bringing in big box office numbers.

I agree. The first one was pretty good too but David Zucker has a better comedic style..it's less stupid. I see Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer's writing in the first two movies, which is not good.

Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer contributed NOTHING to the second movie but it was pretty weak. "Scary Movie" was the best.
The Wayans didn't sell the rights. Mirimax owned the rights and I think that since the box office returns for the second installment were disappointing the Weinsteins hired David Zucker to helm the third installment instead of the Wayans. I remember reading about the first movie and how much controversy it raised because the movie wasn't marketed as a gross-out comedy and many parents who brought their children to watch it didn't expect the content to be as graphic. "Scary Movie 2" was a moderate success but I think its box office returns suffered for this reason.

Scary Movie was successful because it parodied recent successful films like Scream and I Know which were popular with teens. The second one went and parodied The Exorcist and The Poltergeist which most people that Scary Movie 2 was targeting probably hadn't seen.Scary Movie 3 went back and parodied recent hit films like the original.
