Changing the actress.

Changing the actress that plays Aviva good or bad?

I loved the story, but changing the actress was just too jarring for me. It took something away from the script. I think that one good actress would have made the character stronger and easier to relate to.

What a waste. Oh, the humanity!

That was the point. She could be any girl. The movie is genius. This should have an 8.0 at least. The fact that nobody else sees that makes me sad for humanity.

I understand WHY it was done, but it just didn't work for me.

I disagree. A woman the age of Jennifer Jason Leigh wouldn't have to worry about her parents forcing an abortion on her. One reviewer said they changed actresses/actors because each new Aviva showed her self concept at the moment (she was overweight and slouching when she had sex for the first time, she was old and experienced after Bob left her, etc.).

Either way, it was jarring and disrupted the continuity to me. I would have preferred to have one actress playing her. I had other problems with the movie as well, but that's for another thread.

The fact that this movie is almost rated a 7 makes me sad for filmmakers of actually good movies.

Exactly. It was jarring and removed me (the audience?) from viewing the movie as reality - meaning it would really move and touch us - to something abstract. The movie was fantastic, but the inconsistency of the character by changing the actors was a bad call. Ever heard of a multi-faceted performance by a single actor? Yeah, it's possible, happens, and Todd should've gone that rout instead of relying on different players for different dimensions.

I wouldn't speak on behalf of the audience.

I thought they all did a wonderful job of portraying the same character. Even though the looks changed drastically, they were all distinctly the same person. They spoke the same way, had the same mannerisms, etc. Not once was I put off by the changes in actress. I think it made it a better movie. The point was that no matter how much she changed, she was always the same. I can't think of a better way of showing that.

The hammer is my penis.

I've known 13 year olds with more "personalities" than Aviva so it was quite believable to change the actresses (actor) as her perception of herself changed.
I particularly liked Jennifer Jason Leigh's portrayal even though I didn't recognize her at first. I thought how haggard and old this actress looked compared to the others, but considering what she had been through I thought it was quite a deft casting stroke.

I loved the changing of the actresses.

Obviously it was there for a reason, and I won't go into that because it's been done to death, but aside from anything deep and meaningful, I thought it added to the surreal humor excellently, and stopped the film from feeling like an edgy "issue" movie, something that Solondz wanted to stay away from.

I also loved how terrible the acting was from some of the roles, especially the Mama Sunshine portrayal and the first/last girl. The horrific hamminess of the final line makes it seriously, seriously creepy. Had any of the other Aviva's said that, it would have not had any of the same effect.
