Casting Changes

I'm sure this is somewhere on this board already, but all I found were a bunch of people whining because they feel attacked since this movie "misrepresented" Christians, pedophiles, Mid-Westerners, 13-year-old girls, etc., so I got tired of sifting through the laments and thought I'd ask again.
Why did were the roles of Aviva ("Henrietta") and Judah ("Otto") played by different actors throughout the movie? I know Mark had his speech that you can change yourself but will always be slave to your genetic makeup, but I was wondering if there was something more to it than that. Did each Aviva represent a different side to her personality and if so why did they all come back at the end?
Though I do enjoy a lot of indie flicks, I'm no art house fanatic and sometimes I need some symbolism explained to me.

I read from the little booklet that came with the DVD that Todd Solondz kind of did it, I think all in the spirit of fun, and to sort of toy with the audience. He said how on "Bewicthed" he would be mad or confuzed how they would recast people, and how the characters didn't notice.

I also kind of feel, he did it too see the different directions the multiple actors could take their characters. I also do feel that each representation of Aviva or Judah even, did show their personality or reputation at that state in time.

their physical appearance represents aviva's emotional appearance at that time in the story...
