Did any other Solondz fans just not like this one?

I loved Welcome to the Dollhouse, Happiness and Storytelling. But I could barely bring myself to finish this one. It might sound trivial but one of the main things that I hated about this movie was the score, as in the "La La La" *beep* I found it so contrived and utterly obnoxious. Then initially I was confused at who all these characters were that apparently had the same parents. When I found out they were all supposed to be Aviva, I figured I'd see where it went. But not only did I absolutely hate the character of Aviva, I found every actress playing her to be boring and completely unimpressive and honestly just hated having to watch them. I ended up with the feeling that this idea was pretty arbitrary and it made me think of what the director was trying to hide (ie unability to find a suitable actoress, or create a dynamic character) with this device. I think the story and the way it materialized on screen just bored me as well. I don't mean to just take a crap on this film, as I enjoyed Solondz other films. And I know this is just my humble opinion, but did anyone else find similar problems or am I alone on this assessment?

I have seen Ed Wood films better than this hunk of junk.

I'm with you. I only rated this one 5/10, which is about 8th percentile for me, or worse than 92% of movies I watch.

Of course, my favorite Solondz flick is Fear, Anxiety, Depression, followed by Happiness.

I found the numerous actors playing Aviva to be gimmicky and distracting. It could have added to the film if better actors were cast. Instead, I found myself wondering why I should care about the character.

Sincerely, yahmez the mad.

yes i thought it was boring compared to his other movies. the charater was weak in personality, and i just didn't care what happened to her. the little black girl that kept sticking her tongue out everytime she spoke, bugged the hell out of me.

Agreed. I thought Happiness was great, Storytelling was good, and Dark Horse was okay.

Palindromes is the worst movie I've seen in a long time.

reply

I didn't hate it even though it's not as good as happiness and storytelling.

Yeah, I agree. I love Solondz' stuff in general, but this one just didn't quite work for me. It had a few interesting/entertaining elements and performances, but overall, it was just a big bubble of nothing.
