Only Popular b/c Bale's Weight?

I don't think this movie is very great or interesting. The ending wasn't satisfying for me.

This movie was highly recommended to me, and one selling point was the amazing transformation Bale makes. Is this movie just a long excuse to watch a freak show?

@BrightLitStar: Stop posting these idiotic non-comments everywhere. Not everyone shares your opinion. Grow up and deal with it, or shut up.

The film was well-received upon its release and today many still find it to be an effective and finely-crafted psychological thriller. It may not be your cup of tea, but evidently it has its audience — and to them, Bale’s transformation is not an excuse to watch it.

Having said that, it’s hard to see the film attracting the kind of attention (and arguably achieve the cult status) it has if not for Bale’s dramatic weight loss. Whenever I see a video or read an article regarding the film, Bale’s transformation is always mentioned above anything else. So yeah, while The Machinist is generally well-liked, I think Bale is the main reason the film became more popular than it would’ve ever been.

Agreed. It is almost a shame that Bale did that. Perhaps the film would get more attention for its merits rather than sensationalism. I know people who won't see it because they are grossed out by the stills they have seen.
I thoroughly enjoyed it. 8/10
