Moving to NJ...?!

Ok, so... this is a kids' Disney movie, so I really don't want to read too much into it. There's just one thing that doesn't really make sense...

Lola's mum is relocating to NJ for whatever reason (she's an artist who works at her own place... why would she want to move???) and Lola is forced to go even if she'd rather stay and live in NYC by herself. This makes perfect sense, as she's 16 and her dad's dead...
But, wait a minute: her dad's not dead!! Not only is he alive and well, but he lives in NYC, has a successful career, is on friendly terms with his ex wife and cares about Lola very much... Why in the world couldn't she stay with her dad, if she cared so much about staying in NY?? Why doesn't she even bring it up when she's wining at the beginning??

Ok, she had to move to NJ for the whole movie to exists, but the whole thing still doesn't make much sense: they should have planned it out better, planting some line that would give us a reason why Lola couldn't go live with her dad.

It's a Disney movie. Nothing ever has to make sense in a Disney movie.
But I liked it. Much because Mary/Lola reminds me of myself. :P
The Dark Lord will rise again!

We don't know what the custody arrangements are.
But during the school year it makes sense for Lola to live in one place. It's not unusual, though, for the mom to get custody.
Could be money. A lot of artists relocated to places like Hoboken, NJ in the 90s because Manhattan and Brooklyn were unaffordable. Some of those NJ towns really did become cool, "arty" towns. Of course Carla represented the Mafioso contingent of North Jersey.

"Joey, have you ever been in a Turkish prison?"
