Why did Satan...

say to Constantine, "youre the one soul, I would come UP here to collect myself", but then he actually dripped down and came from above??

classic movie mistake, or am i missing something?

reply

Constantine tried to commit suicide but failed. That meant his soul belonged to Satan. But after his failed attempt he fought Satan and evil, foiling many evil plans. So Satan REALLY wanted him. Unfortunately for Satan, Constantine committed a noble act of self sacrifice, redeeming himself. So Satan cured Constantine's cancer in the hope that he would commit another mortal sin during his extended life.

Hairy

reply

yes, i got that from the movie.

i was really asking about why satan said he would willing come up to our level here on Earth for Constantine, meaning coming up from hell below, but in the movie, he actually came from above. we dont actually see him appearing but the first we see of him, is the black tar-like substance dripping down, suggesting that he is descending from a high place.

On the director commentary they said that Satan had to desecrate the ground before he could walk on earth. So while he came up from hell, he could not touch ground until the demonic black tar like substance dripped from his being.

reply

Interesting, regardng the director commentary. I always assumed it was the tar from the rooftop of the hospital that melted as he came down thru the ceiling.

But why would God allow Satan to do that? Doesn't god have more power than satan and could have stopped him from doing that to Constantine so that he could go to heaven?

According to Constantine, God and Satan made a bet to see who could win the most souls. They both stick the rules and allow souls to go "up" or "down" according to the set rules of the bet. God *could* have stopped Satan from healing Constantine, but it would have broken the rules of the bet.

reply

but why would god stoup so low to make a bet like that in the first place?

reply

Read the book of JOB. That's where the idea comes from.

reply

Because God, according to the bible, is not the all loving all caring God modern Christians claim him to be.

Lucifer was god's closest friend and the highest of the angels, until he betrayed him, it's likely that they still talked afterwards. A bit like how Professor X and Magneto still enjoy the occasional game of chess in between Magneto's bouts of genocidal mischief.

You don't know sh!t, Jon Snow!

"Up" and "down" are meant figuratively, not literally.

Yah, the whole thing about Satan and hell being underground is probably an ancient mistake caused by misunderstanding volcanoes.

As a member of the angelic race, Lucifer is a higher being than humanity and probably would live on a higher plane, in some manner.

We find in the Trivia that hell was originally going to be depicted as a black void, with oil on the floor. So the dripping substance might be a left-over from that plan.

reply

^^This. Originally Hell was supposed to be like a black void and oil and tar on the floor. That's referenced when Angela smells the sulfur and Constantine tells her about it.

Alongside the other answers, there is also the possiblity that it could be symbolic of his fall from grace...afterall he is a fallen angel.

Most awesome Satan entrance ever. Also good to know that Satan owns stock in tobacco companies.

I understand. Thank you for telling me. -The masked bandit

Because this film is horribly written, makes no sense, and bears absolutely not similarity whatsoever to its source material.

This movie makes it pretty clear that heaven and hell are basically parallel dimensions. They aren't actually up and down respectively.

The actual concept of hell being a pit of fire, damnation, etc; is actually something the church ripped directly from the pages of Dante's Divine Comedy.

Just like the mythical form of the 'Devil' is an amalgam of Poseidon (Trident/pitchfork), Amun (behorned & cloven-footed God of fertility.) and a few others.

What does that have to do with anything I said?

Hell in the Divine Comedy isn't really a place of fire either. Inferno is just the Italian word for Hell, not fire. Hell in Inferno isn't simply a burning pit. Different levels offer different punishments for different types of sin. The lowest level is actually ice, and Satan is stuck in the ice, punishment for his betrayal of God.
