No Sequel For a Movie That...
profited by $130 million? What gives? We get sequels for Transformers and G.I. Joe that don't have plots nearly as good, but not one for Constantine? HOllywood sucks.

shareI know, right!
I think it was actually the timing of the film. it was released early 2005, around February i think, and so by that time, all throughout 2004, audiences were privy to a whole slew of supernatural-martyr/exorcist/demon-exporter/flawed-hero type films, like Hellboy, Passion of the Christ, Van Helsing, Exorcist: the beginning, that this gem was really overlooked.
And you also need to factor in the view that there are a lot of people out there that really do not like Keanu's delivery. I actually find his "delivery" a bit lacking, but his ACTING on the other hand, he has a presence that few actors of his generation have. For example, you take someone like tom cruise, put him on screen with no lines, for about 2 mins, just a face shot. And then you have keanu, doing the same thing for 2 mins, you will find more subtle emoting in Keanu, an openess to his features, he has a kind of translucency, fragility and light, at the same time, something very unearthly and magnetic, that actually makes him perfect for constantine, and his genre of films.
If you notice too, he has played a messenger alien (klatu), a chosen saviour (Neo), a religious figure (Buddha) etc. A person who wakes up to his new destiny, or a new perspective, and has to sacrifice something or rather. I mean, it can be said, he is typecasted (althought if you look at his other films, he transitions well enough to other roles), but i really think there is something about Keanu that makes him perfect for the gentle tortured saviour roles.
Just my 2 cents, though. :)
Haha, i went off track there. But yes, I would really love to have a sequel to this. Maybe Constantine comes across someone younger who was just like him, and so he has to impart some of his skills to this new demon-exporter. train him, we saw little bit of this with Chaz Kramer, but it was never fully fleshed out.
The premise set up in Constantine is that there are a handful of humans who can peek beyond the veils of this world into the next, i think that really opens it up. We have ppl like isabel and angela, who have the natural gifts to see, and then we have constantine, a suicide case, died and as a result HAS to see. So, the new demon-exporter Constantine has to train, can be of this two variety. or a third new one, if they can think of something new.
It could be a boy or a girl. And better yet, judging from the themes of loyalty and allegiance, this new apprentice is always on the line, and we never truly knows where he or she stands, or what he or she chooses in the end.
Constantine then takes on the role of a "father", protector, judging from chaz kramer's death, there is reason for him to show a bit more causality towards his new charge.
it could actually be an interesting development of the story. Supernaturally, i quite like also if the movie kept its focus small. Not like a whole end of the world apocalypse thing, but like the original movie, a kind of quietly planned politcal overthrow of satan by his own son. these smaller and more focused plots are more interesting and really ground the story, instead of being run of the mill "we have to save the world".
The half-breeds premise is also very interesting to develop. I'm sure there would be plenty of idea from the comics too!
Should've been a sequel to this movie, we get three Twilights and only ONE Constantine movie or just three Blade movies??

I wish there was a sequel.

Every movie doesn't need a sequel and many don't deserve them. Between the movie and flashbacks, enough of the story of Constantine was told. There were no cliff hangers or unanswered questions. Other than that, movie sequels are essentially made to squeeze more money out of an idea and usually ends up watering down the almost superior original concept of the first movie.
That being said, Constantine was just ok but not so great that it needed to have a sequel. Sure it made back double its budget but double is no longer acceptable in today's box office unless the producer, director or star are willing to kick in their own money and that obviously wasn't the case or there might have been a sequel.
In reality it wasn't that profitable. Films have to be marketed as well, and the average cost of marketing a film is about $40 million, so it would have had to recoup at least $140 million, not $100 million. Sure, it grossed $230 million, but the studio doesn't see all that monye. The exhibitor gets something like 40%, so out of the $230 million the studio only saw $138 million of that, which would have just about covered the cost of producing and marketing the film. It broke even, but the makers wouldn't have seen any profit until it came out on DVD. I would think twice about producing a sequel to a film that only just broke even. A PG-13 sequel might have a shot, but then you've got to ask if you can do the concept justice with those types of restrictions.
shareYeah, but that was kind of my point. G.I. Joe gets a sequel with budget/gross differential less than that of Constantine. The first was crap so the sequel will likely crap as well. Constantine was better quality and more entertaining. It's based on a comic so surely there a various interesting plot lines to explore. Especially compared to a movie based on a Hasbro toy.

There's no kickback or lucrative merchandising opportunities on a movie like Constantine. Def not for something to do with religion. Outside of a cult audience, no one is really interested in a sequel. Nobody even talks about the movie anymore.
GI Joe spans several generations from the older fans and the original action figures, the 80s fans and the cartoons and comic books to the newest fans and the movies. It's profitable in a way Constantine could never be. It doesn't matter that the movies are crap. The fan base is that much stronger and that's where the film industry would rather put it's money.
A bit late to this thread, but GI Joe and Transformers both have extremely lucrative toy lines, and their success and sequel warranted-ness is heavily dependent on those sales and not tickets.

(((((((((((CONTAINS MINOR SPOILER))))))))))Just watched it again. Can't wait for sequel. Now for laughs: Constantine 2: nicotine gum. Or CONSTANTgumchew. I'm pretty sure he took a nicotine gum at the end of the movie.
shareLOL!!

yeah, i would love to see a sequel of Constantine. This movie is absolutely awesome. Come on Warner Bros.! Give this movie a chance!
shareThe problem with a sequel is that they've already used the "best bit". The storyline that the movie was based on was Hellblazer's award-winning story arch and probably the best of the comic. A sequel would either be a new story they make up, or a lesser story from the universe, and either would probably be bad. I think it should just be left as it is.

Not a lot in terms of plot, but what is there seems fairly generic so far. Hard to say if it is based on actual stories, but it could be based on one that doesn't spring to mind. If it's not an actual story then it does seem to be the generic nonsense I feared.

I disagree, not from a comic book storyline point of view, but from a cinematic one. I know most purists who follow the original works don't like to see the originals toyed with when adapted for film, but I found the overall character arc of Constantine very intriguing and I sure wouldn't mind seeing a new storyline involving new antagonists being created for a sequel.
I think the movie did a great job setting up Constantine's character and relationship to the biblical netherworld that he can transverse with. There's enough biblical material to create some new plot points and plot devices for an entire series.
I say give it a chance. If they can make a series of films out of Sex and the City or remake all of Paul Voerhoven's films then why not make a sequel to Constantine?

I agree they did a good job. Most "comic to movie" focus seems to be on X-Men etc and I think this movie fell between the cracks in this regard. What you're suggesting though, is almost what they did with The Crow (only the original wasn't that good). They took a story written by someone, with a character created by someone...then decided to come up with new stories for that character without the involvement of the original author and it just failed miserably. I think if you deviate from the source material it is destined to be rubbish. If these movie writers could do as good a job as those in charge of the comic, then they'd be writing the comic themselves :)
shareYa this is very good movie and it certainly deserves a sequel, too bad they haven`t made any till now.
shareI can understand that the first movie did not make as much as they wanted.
But what I don't understand with these type of movies is why they don't even try to make straight to DVD sequels or something.
Now, I know a lot of times those type of movies suck. But sometimes they are not so bad. Not all DVD movies suck.
I can understand they won't make a movie as big as the first one, But I don't understand why they decide to bury the character and not do anything with it. (Same thing with Daredevil Punisher etc)
I don't get why they don't just Do Something... And I don't get why they don't try to make some straight to DVD movies or something.
Well, a Constantine TV series just got greenlit for the fall, so that means there's room to do a lot more with the character, like you said. Here's the trailer:
