Can John really read the cards ??

I've seen this movie over 100 times and just now i realised that. Maybe it was mistake or coincidence but . The second time john goes to the club the bouncer raises the card john says something fast and i think the bouncer says sorry and john punches him. Then i saw that there is a mirror behind him . Was john seeing the cards from the mirror?

Yes, I think John can read the cards. I took it that the bouncer was lying on Midnite's orders (not wanting to see Constantine), pretending that John had got it wrong when he really hadn't.

Ah thanks that makes sense!

Because Constantine says "Bird on a ladder" and it actually is a bird on a ladder.
