What is exactly is the 'chair' used for?

In the movie all we see is Constantine use it to go back in time to follow some sort of event. Is there an explanation somewhere for what the chair is suppose to be used for.

reply

To follow the guy who obtained the spear of destiny to find out where it is. Well that is my theory anyway.

Why people are so dumb? they need everything to be explained so they can get it ?

The chair is used to make a connection between our mortal realm and heaven or hell. It will enhance the power of the person using the chair. (remember Constantine used to see dead people when he was young, he had a gift, or a curse, whatever you look at it)
Few people in the world had such abilities to see things before they happend, to see dead people, to read blindly to news papers (the monk), to look into the past and future, just call them GIFTED.

That's my 2 cents on the matter, i could be wrong.

I'm thinking that particular chair was obviously an electric chair back in the day. Maybe it executed so many people or the right people to be a super conduit to the other side or to enhance ones own ability (like another poster pointed out).
Constantine can see half breeds and that's what drove him to suicide in the first place and may have enhanced his powers.
Is the chair in the comics? If so, I wonder if it explains it there. I was curious as well.

reply

I'm not sure that's all of it. Like the OP said, when John sat on the chair and after the ritual he was able to trace what used to be Manuel's footsteps. Him looking into the's cat's eyes and what ever happened to Angela in the bathtub made them travel between plains but I believe what the chair does is something else that just isn't explained.

reply

200 people were executed in that chair, presumably by electrocution. Hence midnite thrusts a lit light bulb on John's wet feet so he can travel to other worlds.

reply

But it wasn't used to travel to other worlds. Constantine just used it to trace the dagger, which was on Earth. The guy who commented further up on the thread last year is a douche. Calling people stupid when he has no idea about the chair. Oh ok, the chair was invented and then kept by midnight because it can trace the dagger. Very specific creation don't you think?

I think it can increase one's abilities or whatever they are trying to do at the time. Constantine (like Isabel and Angela) was psychic. So the chair enhanced his ability in finding and tracing the man who had the dagger.

WHAT the chair is was stated pretty explicitly by Papa Midnight. He said 200 souls passed through it at Sing Sing. That makes it pretty obvious that it's supposed to be the old electric chair from Sing Sing prison in NY State. (Although there were actually a total of 614 people electrocuted at that particular prison.) Also, the prop itself is a pretty accurate representation of what most electric chairs looked like. I have no idea if any specific design details were added to make it more closely resemble the actual chair from Sing Sing, now in storage at Green Haven prison, also in NY state.
I think the previous poster was correct in stating that it acted as an "amplifier" for psychics, (those willing to take the chance that it might kill them, anyway)but what else it might be able to do, if anything, was never made clear.

Nope. Not even remotely. Unless I missed some vital bits of dialogue, there was a lot of mumbling going on...

Well that's just stating what its purpose was, not what it's used for now.

This is conjecture - it may well be accurate, but we are left to draw this conclusion, as it's never really made clear.

It's stated very explicitly in this comment that the chair is the one used in the green mile so he was able to tap into John Coffeys power (like the drink, but not spelled the same), because both of their names were John.

If his name was Toby or Gilbert it wouldn't have worked.

It's just unfortunate they weren't able to utilise this in the Terminator.

Noticed when Constantine sat on the chair he wanted to face towards the East and Midnite's room had arabic architecture made to look like a mosque.

Its that man again!!

reply

He just wanted to catch the sunrise. The dude is obsessed with performance aesthetics, how could he miss that opportunity?

reply

The chair was used for prisoners on death row. Because so many people died in it, it became a portal to the underworld.

Constantine needed strong magic to go back so far, so fast.

He faced his chair east to invoke the Watchtower of the East, it represents the element of air or intellect, it's patron the angel Raphael. Raphael watches over all travelers. Traveling is definitely what Constantine did while using the chair.

It's maybe a old topic but check what i found.

''The prisoner would be asked for any last words or for a benediction.'' (New York Section-Sing Sing)

I don't know why this chair in particular but anyway the traditon was to ask the Condemned prisoner for a benediction. A benediction according to the source is a short invocation for divine help, blessing and guidance, usually at the end of worship service. So this is clearly an important relic with many invocations of guidance, Like john did in that scene.
