Who was the fat guy and what was he trying to do?

He went into the morgue to look at Isabel's body and jumped when her wrist moved. What was he trying to do? Surely it was more than just "groping" as the report said later. Why did he try to drown himself in alcohol and why did he pierce his wrists? It appeared nothing was going into his mouth even though he tried at least 2 bottles of wine (champagne?)and one of clear alcohol (gin, vodka or grain alcohol?)but they said he died of alcohol poisoning. If suicide was his aim, why do it that way? Anyway I think alcohol poisoning would take a lot longer than a few minutes to work.

I think he acquired his power from alcohol, which was a double edged sword as he was an alcoholic. He knew something evil was afoot, so I suspect he was desperate to drink so he could access his power and see what evil was approaching.

The bit where the alcohol would not come out of the bottles was an illusion created by Balthazar. In the priest's mind nothing was coming out, so he kept breaking bottles and attempting to drink them. What he didn't realize was that he was indeed drinking it all, that is, until he collapsed on the floor and started coughing up the alcohol.

Once he realized he was dead (or soon to be), he carved the symbol on his hand (which may have referred to Balthazar) as a warning to Constantine, so he would know who killed him.

Ok, that answers about the alcohol. What was he doing with the girl?

He was trying to find out what was going on - and found the sign of mammon where the demon "touched" Isabelle. That is why Isabelle killed herself, to stop getting possessed my mammon and acting as his gateway. She sacrificed herself.

I think he just liked drinking as a pastime, but wasn't an alcoholic. But someone (balthazar? Mammon?) turned "his favourite pastime into his worst nightmare" or something like that.

It's some kind of curse he usually would have been protected from by the amulet (bullet proof west) but he got incredibly thirsty suddenly and tried to drink but didn't feel it. The curse played a kind of trick or illusion on him. Constantine just wanted him to find something out but not investigate by himself - if he had called before going to the morgue and Constantine would have gone with him he wouldn't have another ghost following him around.

He didn't die of alcohol poisoning but simply drowned from pouring alcohol down his throat. It wasn't a suicide either since he didn't want to kill himself, you can see the angel halfbreed protecting him and probably guiding his soul to heaven in the end.

he was an ex priest, trying to stay sober, but the demons/halfbreeds wouldn't let him rest. hes the one that brought JC the castouts...He eventually got tricked and ended killing himself. i believe he was looking for Mammons mark on Isabel's body to let JC know which vessel Mammon was going to try and use next, and that Angela was next. the impregnation/possession.

Groping her?

I thought he had powers and the necklace he wore stopped the voices in his head, aka his "powers" and when he touches Isabel, her wrist doesn't move, the marking on her arm sparks his power.

I thought the alcohol was just for a bit of courage, either because he was in the morgue to begin with, or for a bit of courage as he knew his powers would show him something dark, something he didn't want to see.

I could be completely wrong, but that's why he takes the necklace off him to begin with, to activate his powers. He later gives it to Rachel Weiss as protection against the dark powers.
I don't think it's really got anything to do with drinking. The following scene where he technically drowns himself looks like a mind trick. He doesn't look like he's trying to get drunk, just that he really needs a drink of some sort and everything he try's to pour into himself ends up still in the bottle. Or so he thinks.

The alcohol numbed the voices and dampened the spiritual connection he possessed (I assume this is what the necklace also did although I don't understand really why he didn't just try fumbling with it to put it back on).

Bathlazar (sp) was acting as an opposing force against him, so he thought (as did the audience) that he was unable to consume any alcohol, when in reality he was actually poisoning (or what I thought, drowning himself).

The symbol he stabbed in his hand was a clue for John since he must have realized he was about to die or at least in mortal danger.

And he was with the dead body of Isabel not to grope her but because whilst scanning those newspaper articles something or another spoke to him, leading him to the morgue to further investigate (he was honestly just following John's own instructions of finding more odd occurrences like the strange exorcism at the very beginning of the movie).

He says the alcohol silences the voices, his power.

and I'm sure he went to the morgue to see if he can 'read' her and get more info, and also to grope her.
