True indicators of failure of feudal system

I love this movie! I think that it truly shows the final stages of decay of a feudal system. The central Barons (shogunate and retainers)had bled the locals dry with taxation and ceremonial expenses. Good men like Yoshimura-san,a man of high loyalty and courage, were reduced to mercenary tendencies to survive. The samurai didn't go out with a bang, they were just lowered to a hand-to-mouth existence and joined the rest of the working stiffs. Many samurai still stayed loyal to a system that had created their misery. This movie really hits you in the gut with their anguish and pathos. This is the definitive documentation of the passing of an era. This is a must-have DVD for any true samurai fan.

I would hardly call this a weak effort. This film really made me grasp the importance of such a teragedy as the one that befell the samurai class during the meiji period.

There are films that perhapes do a better job of giving insight to the situation of that time but I would definatly not denounce this film as being mearly a "weak effort".

Hey ... do say that this film is weak is more than a little harsh.

The film is very melodramatic, and manipulative, and perhaps if I didn't live in Kyoto, and work next to Mibu Temple (Yes, where the Shinsengumi (the Mibu ro) were), I would also be more dismissive of this film. But I have seen Kyoto's facination for the tradgedy of the Shinsengumi, and their futile battle against an unstoppable chain of events. I have seen walked past pachinko palours where battles were fought, and ate in resturants where people were killed, and sword marks still remain in beams of wood.

wow, thats amazing! I thought this movie was mind blowing and its too bad that it was almost unnoticed because of american samurai movies like The Last Samurai. I was expecting a preachy period drama like "The Hidden Blade", but, it had great sword fighting duels and action sequences and a terrific and dramatic story. For me, it is the perfect samurai film.
