The difference between a good comic actor and Will Ferrell.

A good comic actor can take a so-so cast and so-so writing and make you laugh.

Will Ferrell needs great writing and a great cast for it to be a good movie. In this film he has neither.

I don't get what you mean by one note. I'm thinking through his SNL and movie stuff and I feel like he often plays different characters who are funny for different reasons. I guess I've never seen him play the "straight man" in a comedy team, but I also haven't seen everything that he's done. Could you explain?

reply

Actually he would be bad even with great writing and great cast. He IS bad.

reply

Except for his GW Bush imitation, he is theeeeeee most unfunny person in show business.

reply

lol yeah!...that alone puts him on top as one of the best comic actors in Hollywood....most other comic actors only tend to play themselves with very little variation (if at all any), most of their careers. Other smarter good actors tend to try their hands at different roles to prove themselves, not just limit one to playing comic roles.

No, it makes him a one trick pony.

"most other comic actors only tend to play themselves with very little variation (if at all any)" See: Chris Farley.

The ONLY WF-involved-in thing I've EVER found funny was when he was Eric Bloom and B.o.C. was recording "Don't Fear the Reaper". And the only reasons I laughed -

1) He actually LOOKS like Eric Bloom
2) Christopher Walken was absolutely hysterical

Otherwise, I'm embarrassed for any actor that has the misfortune to share a screen with him. Except for Adam Sandler, 'cuz he's not funny either.

Will Ferrell is way more talented than Sandler. Sandler always goes for forced laughs; Ferrell doesn't. He knows the subtleties of comedy. He does these campy roles on purpose. I fail to understand why he's so much hated. Please do watch the following video to get an idea.
