I don't understand today's idea of humor...if this is funny

Today's movie viewer does not understand real comedy... or satire. All comedy has to be completely idiotic, hit you over the head, shove it down your throat for today's viewer. Comedy used to be about showing you the humor, inviting you in with clever dialogue, physical humor yes, but not with balls hanging out, and not insulting your intelligence. Now it's all about bathroom and shock humor, penis and sex jokes, and way too may people are laughing. I guess that shows the intelligence of the average viewer. Anybody here ever see Dr Strangelove? What about Arsenic and Old Lace? What about Harvey? Yes, they are old movies. Black and white, yes. So what. They are well-written and produced and don't rely on cheap gags or exploitation.

Yes, times have changed. Now please *beep* off.

I agree with you...I freakin HATE this movie. Pretty much hate Will Ferrell for redefining comedy.

reply

You have a dirty, whore-ish mouth, is what you have.

reply

This movie did suck, but so did Dr. Stangelove.

reply

Ok, tim. Anchorman wasn't for you. It's bawdy, it's absurd, yeah, yeah. I loved it though.

But sticking to Ferrell, just to narrow the scope of the post... Did you see Stranger Than Fiction? Did you see Everything Must Go? Even Kicking and Screaming is a warm, gentle, palatable, non bawdy comedy that may gain favor in your eyes.

You are using Strangelove as your benchmark? Kubrick and Sellers and George C Scott? Well, heck, we should all close up shop comparing ourselves to those standards.

But there have been hundreds of great comedies in the last 30 years. And Will Ferrell has made a few.

reply

haha, what a pompous butt-hole.

Did you honestly think this was going to be a high-brow satire? With Will Ferrel, Paul Rudd, Steve Carrell? Really? Then you are dumber than the people you are trying to mock.

'then, you must cut down the mightiest tree in the forrest, wiiiiiiiiiiiiith.........a HERRING!'

pompous? how did you establish that? and who have i tried to mock? if people choose to pay good money to have their intelligence insulted, it's none of my business, but for me life is too short and too valuable to be wasting my time, my hard earned money, and my brain cells on entertainment for entertainment's sake, let alone that which poses as entertainment.

what ever happened to saying something with a piece of film? or am i being "pompous"? do you know the meaning of the word? i doubt it.

reply

No, you are right, this movie did suck balls... I remember I turned it off after about 20 mins of torture. Much like "30 Minutes or Less" just another really bad movie that relies on bathroom and shock humour and not much else. Much like the mainstream music industry people will eat up any *beep* that is shoved down their throats... I prefer comedy with more substance. I do appreciate dumb humour but it actually has to be funny and with actors who can pull it off. Will Ferrell is hit and miss... he's a had a few funny films I'll admit, but I find more often than not it's just not that funny. Elf was one of his brightest moments. I don't hate Will Ferrell, but he is overrated and produces more crap than good.

1. You do realize this movie was released in 2004? It wasn't released yesterday.

2. Blazing Saddles had plenty of bathroom humor, it was released when, 1974?

3. It is possible to like Dr. Strangelove and Anchorman.

4. Comedy is subjective, and not everyone has the same sense of humor.

5. Anchorman was funny, wammo!

Mel Brooks is a friggin' genius and can get away with this. Zach Garfo whatever his name is is decidedly not. Also, compared to the sh*tty comedies which come out today, Blazing Saddles is in fact quite witty and tasteful.

Comedy is subjective, and not everyone has the same sense of humor.
Art is not always subjective; I took an aesthetics class so I know fer sure.

It annoys me that this thread has received so many virulent responses. You guys suck, and, what's worse, you have no taste in films. Go back to watching porn, you troglodytes.

I've never understood the appeal of this movie. It's a good premise but not done very well. It has a few funny moments like Sex Panther and the battle of the weathermen but after that it's just a lot of sub standard... well everything.

I enjoy all kinds of comedy from high brow to low, light comedy to heavy handed; the label isn't important, It's how the comedy is done that is important. There isn't much done well here.
