question about Hoffman's character's desk

When we first meet Hoffman's character, he's busy at his desk with what looks like a pile of dirt or gravel with some bits of ceramic mixed in. He quickly scoops away one pile.

Can anyone fill me in on what was going on there? I couldn't find an answer on the board or FAQ or trivia...

While I am not exactly certain about the dirt itself. A lot of the imagery in his office is a reference to the Belgian surrealist painter Rene Magritte, a man who Hoffman's character actually claims occupies the happy spot in his tree. Maybe you should look into his work and see if there is a lot of fruit in odd places and piles of dirt (with broken plates in it?).
