Here's what I think: Hubie was sending letters to Barlow. At that time Barlow may have lived in France and probably spoke French. Hubie didn't speak the French language, so he had Evie translate the letters. In one of his letters Hubie invited Barlow to come to his house. After fifty years (when Hubie was already dead for a long time) Barlow accepted this invitation and moved to Hubie's house in the Lot.
Straker knew of this story. He may even have been present at the time of the writing (maybe he wrote the letters for Barlow?). Anyway, he confronts Evie with the fact that she wrote/translated the letters for Hubie.
