In one part of the movie someone is in a kind of dream like state trying to open the puzzle box that summons pinhead but he drops it and it breaks.If he would have opened it would he have went into his mind and killed him like he almost did to someone else in part 3?Or would that have not worked because he is sort of just dreaming it?

The someone you're referring to is named Jake. The puzzle box he was handed did not summon Pinhead. Pinhead is already there, already killing. Furthermore, the box was not the original. It was one that Adam made. Adam was the friend that died - we saw his funeral in the beginning of the movie.
So, I don't think opening Adam's box would have done anything to Jake because it wasn't the original box.
