The final scene is juxtaposed with him in the car previously, having a happy conversation about how successful his new business is. This success is shown to be trite and hollow when set against the human cost of his youthful arrogance.

The murders will never leave him. That's why he's so quick to chase up the potential clue, but its vague nature simply reinforces how unlikely it is the murderer will ever be caught. His incompetence let the killer go free and that's something that will continue to haunt him.

For me, It's powerful in a way that there's so much emotion in his eyes. Kind of unsettling and almost as if broken. It leaves you hanging and will stick to you for a long time. When the girl said "ordinary", the impact is more felt. You can feel the emptiness of a very long journey. It hits back the past and you feel suddenly lost again. It's like saying "It can be ANYONE", that 'anyone' means each one of us are capable of doing evil. That it does not need to be in a special form or with uniqueness. It can be just plain and ordinary.

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.
