now that's a nice introduction, thanks!
sharethere are some more must-see movies, such as the "broken wings" which is by far the best israeli film of the past years, "or" which won at cannes festival and is very moving, "atash" and some others which i can't think of right now. ah! "ushpizin" is wonderful, great film. all of tthese are new, since in the past few years there has been a great awakening in israeli cinema, which was quite dead before "late wedding". another one isn't really good but had a huge success in israel- "Turn Left at the End of the World". i think thats enough... hope i've helped.
shareArgh - can you repost his suggestions (if you have record)? Thanks!
shareKnafayim Shvurot or Broken Wings in English is a very good Israeli movie.
shareI wish that I knew more of the titles listed, but I did see Free Zone at TIFF this fall and was disappointed. The Director, Amos Gitai, was present, was very engaging and generous enough to remain throughout and after the showing to dialogue with those who had remained until the end of the film. .. many, many walk-outs. I found that to be in embarassingly poor taste, on the part of Toronto International Film Festival goers. His stated mission, to portray Israelis and Palestinians as people and not good vs. evil icons was to be congratulated. But it was just too damn 'talky'. A noble but flawed effort by Mr. Gitai, as writer/director. I felt that Natalie Portman who was marvellous, in my humble and obviously minority opinion, was 'robbed' of an award at Cannes 2005. Hana Lazlo, the Best Actress winner was um, quite good in a fairly meaty role,(damning with faint praise) but to my mind did not turn in an award-worthy performance.
Overall, **1/2 out of *****
P.S. Definitely do see Walk On Water ****
i haven't seen free zone but gitai is a director that everyone (including every single critic) in israel really dislike and his movies are considered reakky bad. only europians (especially the french) like him very much for some reason.

i've seen a couple of these. they are certainly not all, but they must be the most famous so far
who painted the moon black, just as you passed your love back?
Paradise now is also a good movie.

Paradise Now is actually a Palestinian film, not an Israeli film. However, I still strongly reccomend it, it is a pro=peace movie that shows the faults of both sides of the conflict. (it isn't entirely non-biased, but the closest thing you'll find)
Who's leg do you have to hump to get a dry martini around here?

I lived in Israel for 10 years and only Israelis who grew up in Israel can stomach Zeev Revach. Sorry achi. These are my favourites:
Broken wings
walk on water
turn left at the end of the world
Avanti Popolo (sp?)- 1986 but very good
Bonjour monsieur shlomi
Round trip- made for tv movie
Yossi and Jagger
Columbian love
Before I say anything, keep in mind that as an Israeli, I tend to avoid Israeli films, as usually I don't really like them. Walk On Water was an exception though. I found it very entertaining, though still nothing too special.
However, my favourite Israeli movie and among my favourite movies of all time is The Policeman, which is a 1970 flick by Ephraim Kishon (you might have heard of him. I'm not sure how famous he was). Very moving and quite funny, with a really brilliant major character, and I don't think it has dated at all.
I really didn't like Kadosh and Nina's Tragedies, and I only watched a bit of Late Marriage but it bored me so I can't recommend it, but it's possible I just wasn't in the mood for it. I watched some of Kippur a long time ago, and it bored my out of my brains, but who knows, my taste's changed since then. Still, I'd be cautious regarding Amos Gitai.

Not exclusive Israeli movies but I liked 'The Syrian Bride' and 'Va, vis et deviens'.
shareI think Eskimo Limon and Sapiches were good films, but I wouldn't recomend them to any foreigners, as subtitles can't translate much of the homor (such as funny accents and funny grammar). Though I heard Eskimo Limon was rather popular in Japan.
