Can anyone in the US become a Sheriff?

Do you have to have some sort of training to become a Sheriff,as I found it odd any old Bill or Ted can become the Law.How comes the Rock didn't get any training to be a cop.And can he Fire everyone in the department just like that...seems far fetched to me.

reply

Absolutely.

Here in Minnesota, you have to be licensed to become a peace officer. There are many items that you have to pass in order to qualify. Take a look:

Most states in the US now classify deputy sheriff's as civil service positions so they are protected from being hired and fired at whim. However, the upper management level ranks (usually those above Captain) are all appointed from within the ranks or from elsewhere in the law enforcement community as is the case with almost all US law enforcement agencies.

It's very rare for the sheriff him/herself to perform actual police work so in NY they are not required to be certified law enforcement officers but they usually are. My county's sheriff was previously a deputy before he ran for sheriff and he routinely makes traffic stops as he runs a 1,300 member agency! It's incredibly rare for the brass to leave their desks.

Technically, it is up to the laws of the jurisdiction they are seeking to represent. Also, keep in mind that Americans vote for Sheriffs. Not much chance people will vote for you with no experience and/or training. However, there are still some places, especially small communities, where anybody can run for Sheriff.

In the case of the movie, I think we're expected to accept Chris's Army training and experience as acceptable training. They're not. Administrative and Investigative training is more important to a good sheriff than combat training.

I guess the meek can inherit the Earth now. It looks like the stupid aren't doing anything with it.

and do not forget that the movie is a remake and the original is from 1973.

reply

Exactly. This was based on something that happened over a quarter century ago, when a lot of laws and regulations were still undefined in many areas of the country.

Not entirely true. The standards for County Sheriffs vary and are usually set by the county board or whatever governing body is pertinent (plus whatever that state has on the books). In many places, candidates for Sheriff do not have many guidelines for getting elected, except for no felony criminal record and and forbidding other types of moral turpitude.

Candidates without previous experience do get elected. There's a neighboring county near where I live where a candidate was elected who had just previously held a county board position. He had never worked in the criminal justice system. And, depending on what the union situation is, they can fire people at will in many instances. As far as the deputies go, those guys go through some form of certified academy almost like any other policeman.

Since in most jurisdictions it's an elected office, No! The requirements for deputies are often more explicit.

I shot the sheriff, but I did not shoot the deputy.
Bob Marley understood it. The deputy is more important!
