What types of animals were...

1. Mort...is he a baby lemur, or some sort of monkey-offspring? (or possibly a squirrel as Alex thought)

2. The Fossa? I haven't even heard of an animal called a Fossa (or is it a foreign name for a hyena or something?)

Sorry if the question is painfully obvious to some, but my three-year-old loves this film and it bugs me every time we have to watch it.

The Fossa seem to be some kind of predator found in Madagascar....

As for Mort, I can only assume that he's a young lemur seeing as he lives with all the other lemurs, although he doesn't look like the ring-tailed species that the other all seem to be.
He does look like a baby bamboo lemur (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/graphics/2007/04/11/lemur/l2.jpg). Bamboo lemurs also live on Madagascar... and their young are a lol cuter than ring-tailed lemurs lol!

Hope that helps you!

A fossa, or as the movie calls them foosas are portrayed like hyenas, but they are actually kind of half mongoose half cat
