I wonder where do Julien and all the lemurs live. I know, it's Madagascar, but it's a big island, and actually there ARE people in Madagascar, just not sharing the same space with the lemurs.

Even in cartoons, some research is made about foreign locations.
Pixar, for example, had to go to the tepuis in Venezuela to create the film UP. I don't know about Dreamworks, though.

They did go to Madagascar before they began to create the place of where the lemur's lived (shown on Blu-ray), but that was just to get a picture of how it actually looks there, not to choose a surten place on the island they could duplicate for the cartoon.
The cartoon just takes place some where in the wild on Madagascar.
