The post says it all...what kind of animals are they?

Clearly they should be fossas but the animators did make them look very hyena like. Thus the confusion for most people.

No the animators did not make them look hyena like. They made them look like Foosa's on wikipedia.

Foosas (or Fossas) are actually a mammal closely related to the Mongoosr that has have evolved to become one of the main predators of Madagascar. The film made them look like Hyenas but they are actually totally different animals.

It is the largest carnivore and top predator native to Madagascar and is known to feed on lemurs and most other creatures it can get its claws on, from wild pigs to mice. Unlike mongooses, and more like felines, the fossa has retractable claws and fearsome catlike teeth.
