Would this be an appropriate movie to show eighth graders?

Hello!

Although it is summer, I am starting to look at preparing a Winter Olympic Games unit (I teach English and reading) for the 2013-2014 school year. I am looking for a movie to show my students at the end of the unit.

I remember seeing this movie when it came out in theaters; however, I can't remember if it would be a good movie to show at the end of the unit.

What do you think? Would this be a good movie to end a unit on. I only show two movies throughout the year and want students to really get something out of seeing it. I know the message is strong, but I also don't want to show them something that doesn't have an educational message as well.

Thoughts?

Depends. While this is a great movie and I can't think of anything questionable in the film, the PG rating could put off schools, depending on how they handle it. If the school approves it, it would be a good one, in my opinion. Not only is it a great movie about a real event, but it also shows a lot about history at that time, and the US v. Soviet rivalry in general, along with bits of Cold War daily life.

As for content, again, I can't think of anything objectionable, including much of any language. You should be fine.

Cheers mate!

I would think so the movie is only PG and there are only a few bad words that are in the movie like Herb Brooks says Hell one addressing his team that the name on the front of the jersey is more important then the one on the back, and there are a few other bad words but not bad enough to give it a PG-13 rating like say if they used the F word twice in the movie, and I don't think you will ever hear that word in a Disney movie.
