The title is stolen from a book.......

... by Frank Gibreth Jr. about 12 kids having a father who was an 'efficiency expert' and except for the fact that the mother is named 'Gilbreth' there is absolutely NO resemblance in the movie to the book. Frank Gilbreth Sr. in reality invented many things take for granted today, like the nurse passing the doctor instruments during surgery. He also taught soldiers in the army how to disassemble and reassemble weapons in the dark with as few motions as possible. The book may be old-fashioned now, being published in 1950, but is a good read about his family told with plenty of humor.

It wasn't stolen from the book, this movie is based on the book (notice the difference between based on and adapted from -- this movie is not an adaptation of the books). The concept of a husband and wife handling twelve children in the aspect of the book the movie is based on.

actually it's based on a movie that was based on a book. In March of 1951 the original Cheaper by the Dozen came out and this was a remake of that film with several things changed. Check the trivia section of this movie's page.
