How did they afford that house?


Unless the university paid for it, which I don't see why they would, there's no way they could have afforded that house. Ten bedrooms in Evanston IL would cost millions.

He probably got a signing bonus and, usually, if your job requires you to move the company will provide you a stipend to help with the expenses. The university probably paid for the moving costs and a little toward the house. Also, if they sold their house that money would go toward the new house. This way they could put a lot of cash down up front and make mortgage payments on the remaining balance, making it possible to buy a more expensive home.

I doubt you will see this but I live in a town where there is a major university and the university owns a lot of homes. Most of the homes they own are old homes like the one in this movie. So home comes with the job.
