Why is Season 3 such a drop in quality from Seasons 1 & 2?

Did they change writers or something? Rewatching the series for the first time since it aired, and everything seems off. My friends and I thought that then, and it still holds true now.

It's still good, but the first two seasons are great.

What happened?

Not everyone will accept the premise of your question. Some think its the best season, some think its just different.

I think it is the best season, the most dramatic and compelling despite having some flaws that Season 2 doesn't (the Earps, the non-Brian Cox/Aubrey Morris theater troupe scenes). In other words, Season 2 may be more objectively perfect, but 3 has even higher peaks.

Well I respect the differences of opinion. If you liked season 3 the same or better, more power to you.

While I agree overall season 3 is as good as the other seasons there is something off about it. For me almost none of the new characters worked at all other than Langrishe and maybe Stupid (but that's mostly because of her defence mechanism). The acting troupe, Aunt Lou, Odell, Oshaunessy, the Earps most of their scenes just fall flat and aren't worth watching more than once. Also Steve the Drunk's story which is entertaining in season 2 just goes off the rails and degenerates into unpleasantness. The other problem is the almost complete lack of Woo but that was because the actor had medical problems at the time of filming.

I remember it as a disappointment too but when I re-watched it found that there was still a lot to be commended. Same with ST:Voy, I remembered it as a bit pony for the first couple of series but when I watched it again they had some of the best episodes. Perhaps it's because they leave an impression which is accurate but misses some detail.

You shouldn't trust your friends. After all, they're the ones who keep telling you that you look like Anthony Pettis.

I just finished the series for the first time. The only thing that really dragged down the last season for me was Brian Cox and the acting troupe. Nothing against Brian Cox. I'm a fan but I didn't see the point of his character or any of the other characters in the acting troupe.

I was so wrapped up in the Swearengen character, it just kept getting better and better with each season/episode. We really could've used one more season to wrap it up. Booooo!

I have watched the entire series probably 10 times before, and one thing that happens to me every single time I watch, as I approach the end of season 3, I start to feel down because I know that it is about to finish without a decent series finale.

I agree that the acting troupe seemed a little out of place. Brian Cox is a world class actor, but I wish his role would have been something that I would have considered more relevant.

The Hearst story line was awesome and terrifying.

Is this THE peteyandjia?

Anyway, Deadwood is an amazing series. As I recall, S3 seemed like a drop in quality for me as well, but I'm about to rewatch the whole thing and see if I still feel like that. It's probably mostly the ending that left a bad taste in my mouth.
