What does Gothika even mean?
I tried lookin it up and didnt find any results....anyone know?
shareIt probably refers to the gothic literary genre of the 19th century. The gothic novels were always dark and gloomy, set in a remote castle or mysterious mansion, with a damsel in distress and with supernatural elements surrounding the action.
shareThat is a really good explination of the word "gothika," and I'm stoked that it is posted here. Most of the message boards are a bunch of meaningless rants. I would like to add that there is "gothic" architecture, dating back to the Roman era, which was always forboding and cryptic buliding structure. That is what I first thought of when I viewed this movie.

Ahahaha
shareGothic refers to anything to do with the two sides of human nature.
Batman and Bruce Wayne
Frankenstein and Dr.Frankenstein
Jekyll and Hyde
This refers to the two side of Halle Berry's character's life and dilemma in the film.
Gothic architecture is basically the merging of styles which does, give rise to a merging of darkness and light and dark, imposing, forceful styles that we see in architecture because we take differing styles.
So it is completely appropriate to the film and the nature of the film.
thank you for your post. it was an excellent explanation.

yes thank you ive been wondering what the title ment for like ever!!:)
shareYou wrote: "This refers to the two side of Halle Berry's character's life and dilemma in the film. "
Good point.
And let me add that it relates to her husband who had 2 sides to him too.
Gothica or Gothika actually means anything pertain to or related in any way to Gothic archetecture, literature, lifestyle, etc.
shareI'm with you up until the comment of the Gothic Lifestyle, if that is what you are referring to - explain that if you can. You realize that there are a such subculture as "corporate goths" who are post-30s and can actually afford over the top designer clothing, flying to and from the better goth convention, afford the hotels. Why am I even bothering to mention this? LOL!!

"The Goths (Gothic: , Gutans) were East Germanic tribes who, in the 3rd and 4th centuries, harried the Roman Empire and later adopted Arianism (a form of Christianity). In the 5th and 6th centuries, divided as the Visigoths and the Ostrogoths, they established powerful successor-states of the Roman Empire in the Iberian peninsula and Italy, respectively."

So much for romantic vampires in remote castles :p
