If she was only trying to help...

If the Rachel girl was only trying to help out Miranda, then why did she beat the hell out of her in the cell by throwing her against the wall and why did she slice her arm up in the shower? Was it just because Mirandas husband had tortured her so she wanted to return the pain to his wife or something weird like that Or something else?

I'm thinking she beat her up in the cell so she had a chance to escape when they came in to stop her.
Rachel didn't want her to just sit in the cell through the night... she wanted her to be out trying to solve what happened to her.

And I'm guessing she sliced her up in the shower so Miranda would take her seriously... but I'm not sure.

LOL I was thinking the same thing. Seemed a bit extreme. XD

Rachel was trained by Tyler Durden.

Some people get the idea of double agent confused with double penetration.

Framing Miranda with murder actually does make sense, in a twisted way. If she simply brought the camera to the police while possessed, Doug would have solely been imprisoned. The video seen of Doug torturing Tracy would have only given evidence for torture, rather than murder, since Tracy was under the stairs. Even then, the imprisonment time could have been shorter than the actual sentence. Since such would not reveal Doug's acts of murder, the thought would not cross anybody's mind. He'd be a sexual predator, not a killer. This mindset would then leave him the perfect setup to go back and kill Miranda out of revenge once he satisfied the term of his parole. Doug had repressed his urges once before and it does not seem out of character for him to do so again to get revenge and continue "playing God." If Doug is murdered, any long-term threat to Miranda's life is out of the way.
Direct letters written towards Miranda could be used in a murder trial as an instance of her insanity. Since nobody believed Miranda's ghost stories initially, each letter could be viewed as Miranda's own writing. Minimal, ambiguous, on-the-spot communication could be seen by multiple people and (in spite of its presentation in cuts and blood) would not work in favor of an argument based around Miranda's alleged insanity.

Because they needed something to spice up the dullness of the movie so why not throw in a gratuitous "action" scene that made no sense and played no role in the (weak) plot of the movie.

If ghost just came up and told people what the deal was in a clear and concise manner.. there would be no ghost stories.

Besides, we all assume that "ghost" (a PORTION of a person's memories and feelings stubbornly "not moving on") think and act just like a human would.

Rachel was a ghost but still a young girl trapped in purgatory and not mature enough to know exactly how to express her frustration. Rachel was really upset with Miranda for the same reason Chloe was: She was quick to rationalize every observance and finding. Rachel acted out her aggression in the shower and threw Miranda around the cell as a ruse to get her out but to also develop the faith she needed to look objectively at the clues Rachel would show her.

You know, I wonder if any comedy movies have tried that as a gag, with the ghost wanting to provide help but just irritating/maiming/etc the person they have chosen to help them.

"Thank you, i can now rest in peace."

"...yeah, and all that had to happen was you led me in front of a car, I fractured my leg in 6 places, lost an eye when you sent that needle through it, and had my arm sheared off in a press."

"Yes,and I'll never forget you for that. Now let me scream and burst into flames while clutching you one last time for old times sake."

"Thanks, guys." "So long, partner."

Miranda slashed herself in the shower, just as all of the doctors told her. She didn't remember doing it because she was insane.
