Miranda and Doug's marriage

Any idea how they got married in the first place? She claims to love him...Did he trick her into the marriage...And did she begin to see his weirdness after that?

I was wondering the same thing.I don't get what Miranda saw on Doug.He was not attractive at all, fat, bald, and looked much older than her, in fact he looked like her dad or something..They were the most weird couple I have ever seen.I think the director or whoever could have casted some guy better looking to fit with Miranda who was pretty, young..This guy did not match at all with her..

When I was watching the movie and I heard Dr Graham saying he wanted to have an affair with Miranda,I tought he had been perfect to her, because both are young, attractive..And having Dr Graham I don't get why she prefered her old and fat husband...I could see Miranda didn't pay too attention to Pete Graham, she focused on her husband..I can't understand it..If I were Miranda ,I would have an affair with Dr Graham without a doubt, I would file for divorce from my ugly and fat husband and I would marry with that hot doctor!!

Anthony, the light and love of my life..

Yeah agree. Had a hot Doc like RD Jr proposed, one can jump into it. Kicked the fat baldy out overnight.

You sound very young and/or immature. Marriage is about more than looks. Yes, he was a psycho, but your post focused only on the physical aspects.

From the beginning of the film, I did get the father figure/mentor vibe from Doug. Believe it or not, some women are attracted to men who have a sense of authority about them.

Yeah,it is more than looks,it is important that person is supportive, mature, and loves you, there are lots of aspects to consider, but the look is important too, because in a couple you have sex,and you have to feel desire and attraction..

As a woman,Doug might be my friend,or like a mentor, but I would never see him as a love interest.I wouldn't feel sexually attracted to him in thousand of years.I would go with Dr Graham without doubt. But if I see he can't understand me, support me and being there for me,then he can keep his pretty face for himself..I didn't see he helped Miranda and supported her really,so maybe I wouldn't choose him as a couple, even tough he is extra handsome, but obviously there must be more than a pretty face..

Daddy issues. She had no other family to rely on. You hear about these abused women, or women who are actually married to serial killers and have no clue- their man is their whole world, their faith in him is unshakeable, he nurtures this, his reality is the only reality- why do you think Miranda went to *beep* crazy rather than face the truth

I know looks are not everything but that marriage would have been more believeable if her husband was played by someone like Idris Elba. Then we could understand why she wouldn't want to cheat on her husband with the younger sexier doctor.

Never argue with an idiot; people passing by might not be able to tell the difference.

mochamajesty77-1 - It was very clear that DR Graham cared for her, when he took up her case when she went it. Had he not cared, he would have thrown her out to another supervising Doc instead of looking on her himself. I've mentioned this another post asking how he got her case, considering you cannot take on personal cases.

Doug isn't perhaps conventionally attractive, but I think the character does have a charisma that Miranda was probably drawn to. The guy is clearly intelligent, and when you think back to the first scene between him and Miranda i.e. the mirror and 'I'm God' sequence, he has a definite intensity and power about him. Personally, I think the casting of Charles Dutton was perfect for Doug. You are meant to question her attraction, but at the same time I think in that opening scene you can see it.

As the film goes on you can infer a couple more facts about the relationship. For instance, its mentioned by Parsons that Miranda doesn't have any family, so we could hazard a guess that there is a father-figure element to their marriage. Also, at the end of the movie where Miranda tries to hide from the Sheriff, he says something like 'I'm going to have a lot more fun with you than Doug ever did'. Miranda isn't really that sexually adventurous, and perhaps sex just isn't that important to her full stop. Her work is clearly her number one, and in Doug she found someone equally devoted (or so she thought) to psychiatry.

I think she does love him, but its a relationship that's built on security and intellectual stimulation more than sexual desire.

Thanks for the great post. It helped me understand the POV of the director and characterization better now.
