There are way more occupations that rely on tipping than just the ones you list.

And as someone who used to be a gardener/landscaper during college, they get tipped as well.

I don't like to tip people who guard elevators or hotel entrances because their very existence offends me. I don't need anyone's damn help to open a door or select my floor!

Yeah it doesn't make sense but unfortunately you should throw those dogs some bones.. seeing as that's what they are lol. They're always begging for their next treat. However, I'd have to choose the dog as being more respectable. At least with a dog you know what you're getting. Plus, dogs serve a real purpose.

Some of the idiots on this message board have really made me dislike waiters/waitresses.

well like i said, it is not expected to tip your gardener, you can and im glad that some do, but it isnt expected like it is for waiters/waitresses and barbers, and yes sorry to be another person posting about tipping but i figured if i posted on the others i wouldnt get a response :/

It's because Waiters/Waittresses don't make *beep* for a salary, you'd think you'd know that. Now, if you wanted to address THAT issue specifically, you should have. Instead you make yourself out to be an a$$hole, thinking that someone who makes only 2.70 an hour doesn't deserve a little bit more. Otherwise, we'd have no waiters/waitresses.

Now, if they were paid a fair, steady wage, that might be different. You'd have some waiters bitching because they'd make SIGNIFICANTLY less money, other's might make a lot more. You can argue the economics of actually being a waiter if you want. Just do it with more than a modicum of understanding!

so your saying we should tip them because they get *beep* pay? for one, i dont care what they get paid, if they have a problem with their salary go find another job, pure and simple, secondly...just because they are not getting paid a high amount, does not make what i have to pay their boss/company any less. I could go to a restaurant where the waiters make $1.00 an hour but im still paying 20 bucks for a steak or if i go to a barber who gets paid a dollar an hour im still buying a 15 dollar hair cut, im not made of money dammit i cant tip and spend the required amount as well all the time, and for me to be expected to is ridiculous, plus isnt it illegal to not provide minimum wage? I'm not calling any of you liars im wondering how restaurants can get away with paying below min. wage

Actually your post was just so long and pretentious I decided to stop reading it after three sentences. And none of this still convinces me tipping is not ridiculous. Bottom line, if you make 2 dollars an hour as a waiter, than get another job. And I dont want to hear that you cant find another job, there are jobs everywhere, hell go work at McDonalds where they start you out at 9.50 an hour for all i care. But I should not be expected to tip just because society tells me to. And did you know that if people dont understand what your saying, you could try to explain it better, instead of being an ass? Just something I think you should work on, unless you want your kids to turn into little jerks. That is, if you can find a mate that is smart enough for you that you cant judge every time they dont get something you said.

Dude, are you stupid or something? Why should they find another job if they can make good money after tips? It's not as if they take the job then they find out they make less than minimum wage...they know what they're getting themselves into. Maybe you're just a cheap ass that doesn't like to tip, you ever consider that?

I don't normally get into these message boards but I'm a restaurant lifer, I work in the kitchen not the front of the house though. First of all a large number of waiters/waitresses love their jobs and they generally get good money (After tips), we've had a waiter here for over 40 years and two of his sons are waiters here as well. Restaurant business attracts different types of people than the 9 to 5 crowd that we cater to; we don't usually know how to function in your world and usually don't want too, and trust me you wouldn't last in ours. Second you point out that you're paying $15 dollars for a steak, now let me explain the cost ratio here usually foods such as steak have about a 30% markup from product to your plate, this is changes with each dish meaning say you order something like pasta even though lets say it only costs $10 the markup is probably more like 60% markup which is why restaurants try to sell more of these than the more expensive items. Back to my original point each plate has a markup off of what the restaurant pays for the raw materials, and then that has to cover and more for the bills and payroll, so now lets say we increase the salary; which it is more than legal to pay as low as $2.15 (Local regulations change depending on the place but here that is the minimum) an hour to positions which make gratuities check with any local, state, or federal regulators, and you're adding (using my restaurant as an example) 6 waiters at $5 more an hour so for standard double shift (Lunch and Dinner) your're adding an additional expense of $270 a day or $1,890 a week, or $7,560 a month. I've been screwing around with the math here tonight since I'm bored and doing defensive driving in the background and to make you $15 Steak dinner cost effective at the minimum wage rate for waiters I would have to start charging about $21 for the exact same steak dinner. So that would be equivalent to you paying a $6 dollar tip on the meal you just ordered, which comes out to %40, much higher than the industry standard of 15%-20%. And yes that's in a vacuum at changing the price of only one plate but the theory behind it is what I'm trying to make the point. So that's in my opinion at least why tipping important.

So you are saying:

Steak cost for your restaurant is 10,50$/steak and with 15$ your winning is 4,50$/steak sold. This is your worst margin scenario, because pasta for example is more expensive.

So, lets do the small numbers math and say you are currently selling 500 steaks a day which earns you winnings of 2250$. (This means that with 6 waiters in a 9 hour shift every waiter has to carry out 9,2 orders every hour - which means 1,5 orders in every 10 minutes - which I assume is a pretty slow speed of working as a waiter.)

You are employing 6 waiters and paying each of them from an 9 hour shift 2.15$/h which gives each waiter 19,35$/day. Overall you pay all of them together 116$/day then. (This equals the amount of winnings that you gain from selling 25 steaks!)

So, like you said, giving 6 waiters a salary of 7.15$, instead of 2.15$, for a 9h shift would mean the rise in restaurants expenses with 270$/day.

Next, we have to return to the amount of 500 steaks sold. Current price is 15$/steak so just to add the new salary price to the steaks would mean 270$ divided to 500 steaks. This would rise the steak price from 15$ to 15.54$.

Conclusions: YOU WOULD ONLY HAVE TO CHARGE 0,54$ MORE / STEAK... NOT THE 6$ YOU ARE REFERING TO. - Or if you are serious with the 6$, you are saying your restaurant only serves 45 steaks/day, which means every waiter would serve 0.83 orders/hour... so they are not doing much are they? I can't see any busines just having employees to hang around doing nothing, so I just assume you are wrong with your numbers. NOTICE THAT HE TOLD ME THE STEAK HAS THE WORST PROFIT MARGING... So in reality the steak price wouldn't rise even close to 0,54$/steak.

And finally the advantages: 1)Waiters get paid decent even if they don't receive tips. 2)Tipping can be optional only when you were extra happy with the service. 3)Many people would still want to tip some, no problem. 4)Restaurant gets good reputation for paying a decent wages. 5)Human work is valued more from the start. 6)General publics opinion could get higher from the waiting profession (?). 7)Service will be even better because waiters are happier with their wage and still know they can get a tip occasionally. 8)NO ONE HAS TO "WORRY" ABOUT TIPPING OR WAITERS WAGES ANYMORE. 9)World will be a little bit better place for everyone?

Also, do I really want to be served by someone who's gonna make the same $8 an hour whether the service is good or lackluster or piss poor for that matter? Hope you don't mind getting Taco Bell service instead of full service cuz that's what $8 an hour pays for.

I think instead of people getting mad at not getting the tips, they should work on having their employer increase their wage. The employer can increase the price of the food 15 to 20% to pay for the increase of the wage. This way customers don't need to feel guilted into tipping. Instead they can still offer a tip if they get great service.

I dont understand why I have to keep saying this...THAN FIND ANOTHER JOB!!! and to the poster who said I would not survive in your world...been there buddy. I worked at McDonalds and not only was I a waiter(yes at my mcdonalds we have waiters) but I was also the order taker, the prep guy, and the drive through attendant(and occasionally had to cook as well) so I did live in your world, and never did i complain about not getting a tip, now if you cant handle your wage without tip than go somewhere that pays better, and I dont want to hear the "oh there are not any jobs" you could work at probably any fast food chain, any corporate grocery chain, but you choose not to...you wanna know why? Because you probably think that those jobs are demeaning to you. Now I will admit I do not know you so I cannot technically say that, but I am assuming that is the general idea from restuarant workers. I am not going to pay you more than I am already doing, just so you can keep your sense of honor by not going to one of these are other places. Now I feel I do need to clarify, I am not against tipping in general, I am against the egotistical idea that if you are a waiter or waitress or barber or etc...you should automatically get a tip just because you were nice and did your job. Its the self entitlement that drives me insane.

Have you been on a job hunt within the last 10 years? I doubt it because if you had you would know that not everyone can just go out and "get another job".

Entitled people like you drive me crazy.

If you don't want to tip, don't go out to eat. I don't give a damn about your "morals" or your made up "principals" for not tipping. If you hate tipping so much then advocate for servers, bussers, hairdressers, and other people who make less than the bare bones minimum wage we have now to be paid more. Until then, shut up and get off your high horse.

I used to be a bagger at Publix (first job) We were not allowed to take tips , it was grounds for firing, I got in trouble a couple of times but never fired for that. It seemed unfair not to take tips while working there. We had to push those shopping full of groceries to the customers' cars in the hot Florida sun.

Boston and Philly love to slander us, but they don't have as many fans as us
