Why did super man leave in the first place?

It's explained that astronomers said they found Krypton so he went to see if that's true. But he found just destruction.

He arrived back on earth in what looked like how he originally arrived in as a baby the meteor type spaceship, but this was not explained how he got there and back or did i miss something also?
