Will it Sell in America?

The Cat Returns is a decidedly more western film than Spirited Away is, but it still has elements of Japanese society embedded within. Lots of people like cats, but the last half of the film depicts cats behaving most un-cat-like (nonfelinical?). What are its chances in a foreign market?

reply

It has already been released in foreign markets,
across Asia and in France, doing very well,
along all the other Studio Ghibli features.

There is no US release date for it yet,
but i believe there might be since Disney
did partial financing for the production.

I do have a copy of the movie, and every American
person I have shown it to, loved it dearly.

It'll probably sell to the American public, because of the humor. I showed the film to a couple of people in my dorm and they laughed themselves silly.

However, it may not sell to the distributors, as the destruction of the tower may remind people too much of 9-11.

Don't get me wrong, I have all respect for people who lost near and dear ones in the terrible tragedy of 9-11.
However, a quite strange effect is that "9-11 paranoia" producers and alike seem to be jammed up in:

"Oh my god they blew up a tall building! We can’t sell this film on the American market!"

It’s a shame..

I agree. 9/11 was a horrible day in American history but it was almost 3 years ago. It's time to move on and try to not let it effect other things out there.

It will, but it's not going to probably be as widely received as the Miyazaki-directed titles. People have been waiting for years for a 'Nausicaa' release (a visit to my local Borders Books confirmed this, as Nausicaa's original 10-15 DVD shipment had disappeared).
'The Cat Returns' is a bit too recent to become a big success, though some lament the fact that the Cat Baron's first Appearance in 'Whisper of the Heart' was more suitable, though given it's reputation, my guess is that will be saved for the next wave.
