I found the movie quite enjoyable

I don't know why everyone is bashing this film? Oh yes I do know why. It's because they're Miyazaki Bandwagon jumpers so u know anything that isn't directed by Miyazaki that comes out of studio ghibli just so happens to lack that "magic" eh? Whatever. I personally enjoyed this film much more than howl's moving castle. The characters were charming and of course it was a great watch. It was actually a pretty short film which was ok for me since I have too much crap to watch anyway. All in all it's really enjoyable and I guess some people are too pompus to take it lightly and see it for what it is.

To a certain extent, I agree...

This film is to a degree suffering from 'Ghibli snobbery'.

It's much more childish, short and lighthearted than the majority of Miyazaki's films, but it ranks in my anime favourates and it got a few laughs out of me...

I thoroughly enjoyed it...

Life is pain, Highness. Anyone who says differently is selling something.

Obligatory pointless me-too post. The cat returns is awesome.

Natori is teh freaking rox0r.

reply

You are correct!
This is not a Miyazaki film. His attention to detail is not there. I feel it's a family movie, more like Totoro or Panda Go Panda.

Compare it to either and it's on par.

I like this series a lot. One of my favourite Ghibli anime. The art work is not be as good as Miyazaki's and the story's not that deep. But I like the characters in the story, especially Baron. Very charming cat. Come to think of it, I think it's precisely because the film is short and not too deep that makes the it so fun to watch for me. It has a simple moral message (about having selfconfidence and being yourself) and lots of hilarious scenes.

One reason I loved it was because it was so un-Disney (at least, the modern Disney). Happy ending, sure, but the characters get stuck in situations that might lead to their deaths.

Something to scare your children with, I suppose.

"If you don't eat your pease you will be taken away by the KING OF CATS!"

Plus, they learn about Shakespeare... (wink)

I don't know why people would hate it. I mean, it's not as beatifully artistic as Miyazaki, but it's just as wonderful. One of my favourite bits is when she gets taken away by the cats and they pop out of the hole and go over the edge of the building.

Absolutely brilliant.

It's one of my favorite films of all time. Which is wierd, considering the company it's in (Batman Begins, The Usual Suspects, Akira, just to name a few).

If a machine, a Terminator, can learn the value of human life...maybe we can too.

this film is among my favourite movies along with Ghostbusters, the Life Aquatic and grave of the fireflies its the main reason i now love anime before i saw this film i was a little indifferent but now if a film has any anime in it i'll watch it

I agree with the OP. I liked this a lot more than My Neighbot Totoro, Laputa and Howl's Moving Castle. Also, few movies have made me laugh this much.

Vision... Creation... Newsun!

I did too. What's funny is, I rented both this and Whisper of the Heart only knowing that they were both Ghibli films. I watched WotH first and didn't care for it, I thought it was just too long and didn't really care for the characters except for the Baron.

I then watched Cat Returns and was delightfully surprised because it seemed the total opposite. Way too short, but awesome, wonderfully memorable characters. I'm actually watching it for like the 5th or 6th time as I type this (I rented it and then picked up my own copy a month ago). Because it's only an hour, it's easy to just pop it in when nothing good is on TV.

It's definitely the runt of the Ghibli litter, but it's that cute little runt you can't help but fall in love with because of its unique look and charm.

I thought this film was great, yes it is quite short and the animation is rather different to most Ghibli film but I liked the lighter touch. The film also had some of the best laugh out loud moments in any of the Ghibli films, I thought it was hilarious when the knife thrower got thrown out of the window, I can't imagine that would have happened if Disney had made it

I'm only going to say this once: stay out of Camberwick Green - Sam Tyler

wow, funny to look back on your old posts. It's funny that people call this movie childish, but I recently saw ponyo... wow what a pile of crap

The Cat Returns was quite a charming story. 'Short and sweet' as they say and strong focus upon character/story development.
