Best/Worst of English Voice Cast

Hmmm... I really like Elliott Gould's performance in the film, I thought he was a good foil for Peter Boyle and vice-versa. I totally didn't realise Tim Curry was the Cat King, and his performance was probably the best because of that. I absolutely love him and up until this film thought I'd know his voice anywhere, yet I didn't recognise him til I saw his name on the credits.

I actually disliked the king's advisor the most, even though I suspect this may have been Rene Auberjonois who I have partiality to cos I love his performances in Robert Altman's films. I guess it's cos I hated his character - though, having said that, his voice did actually begin to grate on me towards the end.

I can't stand english dubs....

As somewhat of a fan of this film, I've collected DVDs of it in six languages so far(Japanese, Korean, Cantonese, Mandarin, English, French), though mostly concentrating on the Japanese, Korean, and English versions, as I don't know any Chinese or French. Comparing the English dub to the other two(and discounting the factor that I'm fluent in it and not in the others), overall I'd say it rates pretty well.

Best: Tim Curry as Cat King. It isn't just that he makes it sound good, it's also that he pretty much reinvents the character AND makes it sound good. I dunno how much of his input he had on the script, but it worked well with his voice. That and he's had plenty of animation voiceover experience to work with.

Worst(not BAD, per se, just not as impressive): Peter Boyle as Muta and Eliott Gould as Toto. These ones just didn't sound right to me. Felt too much like live-action acting than voiceover acting. Part of that could be that this is Peter Boyle's first (voice: ) role listed in his filmography. That and the "angry Muta" parts seemed a bit forced. But Eliott Gould's done some animation work before, so I dunno.

Cary Elwes as Baron: Not quite as obvious a casting choice as Patrick Stewart/Professor X, but pretty close, among big-name talent. While the acting and accent are good throughout, there are a few places where I felt he fell below the Japanese and Korean Barons in the realm of "getting into" the character. The skydiving scene comes to mind; he's yelling, but he's not leaning into the yelling. Hard to describe.

Anne Hathaway as Haru: A bit of a reinvention of the role, though not nearly to the degree of Cat King. Personally, I thought the Korean Haru was the best in this role. The Japanese one seemed to be sound much like ordinary talking and not enough acting. Either that or the acting was too good and it's supposed to sound exactly like she's a plain off-the-shelf teenage girl, but it just didn't fully click, I think. They're all good, though; I'm just thinking in matter of small degrees due to having overwatched this movie.

Anne's screaming after the freaking-out-by-the-mirror scene(my favorite part of the movie; huzzah for the animation detail there) seemed a bit overdone, though, especially when she sees Muta. Also has a lack of animation voiceover experience. Also, a bit of a side note: out of all six languages above, the English version with Anne is the only version that has her simply wordlessly screaming at the mirror. The other five all have Haru yelling some form of "CAT!" That and I wasn't quite sure about the "meowzy dancer" line. I really thought they were going to go with "don't know meow to dance" instead...

Rene Auberjonois as Natori: I liked this one. Skillfully done, yeah, but furthermore, he sounds almost EXACTLY like the Korean Natori, just speaking in a different language. When I first read the casting, I thought, "Ok, now THAT'S what Natori should sound like." And it was.

Andy Richter as Natoru: Well, another one of those acting-experience-but-not-voice-acting-experience casting choices, but my gripe's mainly with casting on this one. Why is Natoru a guy? Every other version I've heard has Natoru as female. I really hope they didn't do this based solely off the original English subtitles(which were put onto the R2 DVD by Ghibli, presumably before Disney did the script) where, at one point, Haru refers to Natoru as "one of the Cat King's men". Because, everywhere else, Natoru's definitely a girl cat. But ah well...voice quality for Andy...he plays it pretty well, given the role being somewhat reshaped to be male, but I still prefer the sound of the other Natoru's.

Overall, the English dub's quite good. Simply on terms of sound and acting, though, my favorite's still the Korean dub, with the Japanese original somewhat behind it.

Personally, I don't care who played what part. I watched the movie and I absolutely loved it as a whole. I like it better when I don't pick apart who's voice is who's and what they did wrong. I have this movie and I watch it all the time. After I watch the movie, it would be wierd with another voice in there. I like it the way I first see it and in the end, that's why I like the movie in the first place. Anyways, I do understand everyone's opinions on this, I'm just speaking mine. :) I am 22 years old and LOVE this movie!! Along with Spirited Away, Porco Rosso, Kiki's Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, Castle in the Sky and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. These are just plain good movies. I recommend them to anyone. Thanks for listening to my comments on these awesome movies!!! These are the only Studio Ghibli movies I've seen but if anyone has seen others that they would like to recommend or other anime movies that are good, please let me know. I love this stuff. Thanks!!

I have to say the voice acting was good but not the best.

I thought that peter boyle was too old for the fat cat part.
And Tim Curry was a joke as the King. In the extras he even says he changed the inflection from the original.

Rene Auberjonois has done animation before. He was one of the voices in the Last Unicorn back in the early 80s
