Some questions about the movie

Had some questions after watching the movie:

1) What happened to Haru's father?
2) If Baron and Moon are the same characters as in "Whispers of the Heart", then how come Moon looks different and the Baron lives in someplace different?
3) So can all cats walk upright and talk and live in the Cat Kingdom (when we're not looking)? Or just a few select cats?

reply

1. The father is not in their life. Whether he died or divorced is not discussed. The odds are that he had an affair with a bar hostess and is now living alone in a condo somewhere not far away.

2. Don't lose any sleep over this. The characters in the movie are very much like the characters in the spinoff comic by Aoi Hiiragi. Her characters, are much like the Miyazaki/Kondo characters in the movie which were, in turn, inspred by Aoi Hiiragi's original comic. Synergy seems to be the operant word here.

3. This is not explained in the movie--but makes all the sense in the world to those who read the comic. I will, however, give you a major hint: In the movie, a tiny Haru has a conversation with a kitten. That kitten later turns out to be the prospective bride of a young prince of the Cat Kingdom--when Haru is now seventeen years old. What's wrong with that timeline?

reply

1. (LOL)
2. Well said.
3. There is an explanation: The Baron tells Haru that they live in a world that exists in another dimension, and those with souls (animals and objects) can live there. Also, when they are in the labyrinth, he says that "there is always daylight in the kingdom", this could mean, also, that the timeline between the two worlds is not the same.

If you don't want to know what the comic said, read no farther. Haru, when seenig her former cat, embraced her. She said, "I thoght you were dead." The next pane showed a sudden sad look on the cat's face-- unseen by Haru--clearly stated that her cat was, indeed, dead. This was a cat heaven, not another universe.
