Underrated film
Last night I watched the 2007 director's cut. I have also seen the theatrical cut.
In both cases I walked away with the same feeling: This film is underrated.
Currently the film has a 16% critics' score on RT and a 34% audience score. On IMDB it has a 5.6.
I will not argue that this film is a masterpiece, but I have no problem arguing that it is worthy of higher scores than that. It is long, yes, and runs slow at times. On a few occasions the performances are a little shaky. And as a film about one of the greatest conquerors in history it is suspiciously devoid of great battle scenes.
But on the other hand Oliver Stone successfully delivers a film that is epic in scope, with several great actors, beautiful vistas, good battle scenes (when he gives them to you), and lots of interesting interpersonal drama. Also, unlike some people, I like Colin Farrell here . . . and his blond hair!
This is not necessarily the Alexander the Great movie that I wanted when it was first given to us, but that doesn't make it a bad movie. It's really quite watchable and deserves more credit than it gets. I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys epics.
