ALEXANDER WAS 5'6

And yet I bet if you had someone who was 5'6 playing the part, people would say sed actor was to small.

reply

Very true.
In fact, some academics believe that was his max. height!

Coincidentally, it is believed today (7/20/16)was his birthday.

reply

But so was the average Greek of the time. Everyone was shorter, so in relative height to other actors he was fine.

reply

That doesn't really make any sense to me.

reply

I think the poster was confused between Alexander and CF, haha!

reply

Sure it does. Back then everyone was shorter than now (mostly due to worse food available). So in relation to other people around him, 5'6 was normal height for Alexander. Thus he would not have stood out in the crowd as a short person among the contemporary greeks, so there is no reason to cast him as a 5'6 person unless you are going to cast all other actors the same.

reply

Not true, he was considered short in his own lifetime.

reply

Yes,agreed, he was looked upon as a small man in his own times. I think Colin Lane Fox, one of his biographers, has said he was probably only around 5ft. 4ins. When he sat on the throne of Persia, his Companions found a stool for him to rest his feet. Nonetheless, as in Life, even today, his small stature was no barrier to his leadership skills and courage, and for most of the time, his men loved him. In fact, his shortness has made him a giant of ancient history, by anyone's standards.

reply

Really? He was only 5'6? Blimey. I never knew his height, but I always imagined him to be 6 feet or so.

Still, he should've been taller than the average Greek/Makedonian. Royalty and nobility were usually slighter taller due to the fact that they had better (and more) food.

reply

Why "blimey"? Some historians think he might have been even an inch or so shorter.
Courage, bravery & military prowess not to say genius, do not increase with height.
Caesar Augustus was around 5ft 6ins, reputedly. Many, many military leaders through the ages have not been tall men, some infamous of course, some well known to military historians & academics.
Also, many of the most successful Legions of Rome were comprised of men of very average height, taking on and often routing the much taller Celts of Gaul & Germania.

reply

Yeah he was small - There is actually a qoute by a greek historian writing his life. He said when Alexander took throne of Persia he needed a table to stand on to sit on the chair :)
