why isn't this movie in the top 250???????

If you read the bottom of the Top 250 list, it's pointed out how the list system works. The basic thing is that the higher number of votes you have, the higher on the list you get (if you compare two movies with the same basic rating).

You will notice that the rating in the movie page and the rating in the top 250 are not the same (the one in the list is always lower than the basic rating). The one in the list is calculated by using the formula at the bottom of the page.

Now when it comes to "Best of youth" I have compared it to the last movie on the list (today it was "In the heat of the night"). While this movie has a list score of 7.81, "Best of youth" has 7,78. So it's not far from the list. You just have to make people see the movie and give it a good vote.

"Best of youth" now has 1326 votes. if it gets a coulpe of hundred more, it will probably sneek its way onto the list.

So keep yee faith:)

Something tells me that this will be in the Top 250 by the end of the weekend:)

for my part the system is stupid.
the film has almost 2000 votes and 8.6
it should be in the top. i like the site very much but the vote system prefers popular films.

Because the top 250 is a popularity contest and not a trustworthy top.

The main problem with the film making it to the 250 is that despite the fact that the film is strong in many ways, the writer and director had a hard time ending it. It is a slow film, but nevertheless, it is a tight and powerful one where everything counts in the first 4 fifths of the film. Then it gets lose, meandering and sappy at the end. Life is filled with problems and there are no simple answers. The only way to avoid them is to retire, opt out, and even then it is an illusion - the film shows this in an epic way until the end when it seems all problems disappear and Italy, with the characters, are going into a problem free future. A much better ending would be showing how the main characters opted out but the younger ones are still at it and life is still an uncertain struggle with questionable goals and results, but the message of love that is there at the end would be carried to the younger generation.

Sorry all you fans, I hate shatter any illusions, because I know how much one can love a film like this - and I know that criticism of something you love can hurt, even if it is valid. I love it too - I've seen it three times (once on the big screen) and I seldom see a film more than once. But after all, it does have its faults.

As for the 250 list being flawed, well the world is flawed (one of the main themes of the film) Sure there is some dead wood in the 250 list, and many of the greats are missing. However, many of the greats are there - more than the dead wood. Realistically, for a foreign film to make it to the actual 250 list it needs popular appeal and it truly has to be one of the top 250 - all the way through not just for four fifths.
