Something Manech Says...

I was slightly confused by something Manech says in the scene where he's drinking cocoa and someone asks him about his fiancee. He says something along the lines of, "Now we won't have to wait until after the war. I can go straight home after the execution."

Was he already delirious with the fever? Did he mean after he died, he would be able to see Mathilde...kind of figuratively? Or was he really so naive?

Thanks in advance!

i don't think he was delirious from fever specifically but he was definitely disorientated and pretty much acted that way for the rest of the film. like at the tree. you saw at the beginning that after his friend was blown up he pretty much disconnected with reality.
