Why did the male nurse intend to kill Matildhe?

I missed a few plot details but this is the one that I am most curious about. Why did the male nurse intend to kill Matildhe?

reply

because he'd stolen the identity of another soldier after he'd been sentenced to die in No Man's Land (though he was pardoned, but no one ever found out because the officer who got the pardon ripped it up and used a piece to fix his magnifying glass to look at pornography), and if they learned his true identity and the French government found out, he'd be executed

Thanks! I couldn't necessarily follow all the details.

Wasn't it the farmer who originally intended to kill her? Why did you call him a "male nurse"?

reply

Yes!! What "male nurse"?
