he had never been to that restaurant before, he only went there because of the boat accident in the beginning of the movie

A big island...

Even if it was a small island, they probably passed by each other, like they did when Lucy was taking her students to the place where Henry worked. But they probably never stopped and talked. Think of high school, there's usually what? Around 1,000 students? That doesn't mean you talk to everyone and know everyone's names, or what their story is. It's silly to think that they would know each other just because they both live on an island.

Even if he had crashed his boat and went to that restaurant to eat breakfast, if Lucy hadn't shined her fork into his eyes, he might have just ate his breakfast and left without really noticing her.

That's an interesting perspective you have there, but most people aren't like that. I live in a building with about 120 apartments. I've met quite a few, but some people aren't talkative and don't make eye contact in the elevator, even. Many people don't know their own neighbours, never mind knowing about a single-vehicle car accident. It's not like we saw a headline on the front page telling her personal details and showing her face. It's not someone everyone on the island would be talking about.

How many people are in your town? Oahu's population is over 950,000. Even if he read about the accident, it would be doubtful that he would remember her face a year later.

He's right you know. Everyone on the island of Manhattan has an intimate knowledge of each other's on-goings, especially the unique crazies like Lucy.
