If This Movie Had Been Made By an American Director......

....it would have been a lot less intellectual and a lot more sexual. It would have been reduced to a raunchy sex comedy like Porky's. Before watching this movie, I was suspecting a mean spirited sex comedy and I was actually surprised at how good hearted it was.

Compare this movie to Fast Times at Ridgemont High. This movie was a lot friendlier, a lot lighter, and a lot more intellectual. The abortion scene in Fast Times was a hoot, wasn't it? Audience members were laughing up and down the isles during that scene as I recall.

No, Im not particularly interested in that specific subject matter. Sounds like you are.

You think Fast Times was a failure b/c it wasn't "light?" or the abortion scene wasn't "a hoot?" Are you saying a non-American director would've applied a lighter and friendlier touch to an abortion scene? (Boy, those early comedy masters REALLY knew how to work in some good sigth gags into an abortion scene.. who can forget that early Charlie Chaplin short showing the pie fight in the planned parenthood clinic..? guffaw!)

OK, I know you're not saying that, but maybe you can recognize that a movie doesn't have to be one thing all the time? Fast Times was aimed primarily at teens, using comedy and slapstick to being you along for a ride, and then having the traumatic and tense stuff -- like the abortion and the sexual pressures -- to show you that these are indeed "fast times" for teens.

I liked Ginger and Cinnamon. Infact, I bought the DVD, but upon subsequent viewings the thing that stands out most is how flaky and unsophisticated the humor actually is. The qualities of the movie are more in it's pacing and cinematography (and music). The actual subject and dialogue were not very subtle.

Love this movie and agree it would have been worse if made by an american, or for an american audience. But dude, Fast Times at Ridgemont High is a classic and not at all pertinent to this discussion.

Oh and the abortion scene wasn't supposed to be funny, it was trying to show a serious situation and how that prick Damone did the wrong thing, as some guys in highschool do.

Can't keep me off this escalator!
