It's funny how things happen, wouldn't you agree...

The bizare start to this film was to be a film about children entertainers, whilst it was being filmed, the whole issue came to light, coinsidence? There was something creepy about david, the son who was the clown character who was being filmed for the progect beforhand, i can't quite put my finger on it, but there is something that just doesn't sit well. Am I the only one who feels this. The film is great, it plays with the notion of truth very well.

There is something very creepy about him. He is as crazy as he claims his mother to be. I just hope he didn't have kids, end the cycle of the messed up family. Bad genes or bad parenting, whatever the reason, the Friedmans don't need to continue their line.

Now what could you find so objectionable about David Friedman?

Could it be:

(1) The fact that when his father is arrested for molestation, pedophilia, and rape that he puts his underpants over his head and hollers "I'm the a$$hole for the news cameras!";

(2) He makes a videotape capturing his angst over his father's debacle in which he cries in his boxers and undershirt - and gladly gives it to the producers of this documentary 15 years later for all to see;

(3) He refuses to accept that his father was a pedophile even when presented with his father's memoir in which he admits to being stimulated by young boys.

(4) He attacks his mother for "not being sure" about his father/her husband's innocence and never speaks to her again for divorcing the man after he admits to the charges and is given a life sentence in a Wisconsin prison.

I didn't understand David's motivation at all for what was said and shown in this movie by him. To me it seemed like he himself may have been abused (perhaps by Arnold) or that he was a pedophile himself. He AGGRESSIVELY defended his father and brother and seemed extremely off put by any judgment or doubt that Elaine (his mother) had for Arnold or Jesse. Like her reacting negatively to pedophilia charges personally offended him. Definitely something extremely off about him, and his anger towards his mother was not healthy in the slightest.

I agree that it seemed like he had also been abused. Probably fondled as a young child (by Arnold), but maybe not oral/anal sex. Maybe he doesn't even remember.

The whole reason the film took the turn it did was because the film makers were intrigued at how angry David was when interviewed.
