David in denial about how his father Arnold died

One of the fascinating things about this documentary - and something I haven't seen mentioned anywhere - is that the eldest son David is even in denial about how his pedophiliac father died. David claims early on in the documentary that he "died of a massive heart attack" and talks of how much he misses him. Later it becomes clear that Arnold killed himself - in fact, we see the death certificate which shows he died of a massive overdose of anti-depressants and the uncle Howard confirms his suicide, too.

I can only speculate that David feels acknowledging his father suicide would be tantamount to acknowledging his father's guilt. His father was an admitted pedophile; even if it is not true that he molested young boys at the computer classes he gave (and it seems we will never know for sure), Arnold is a pedophile - he was proven to be in possession of child pornography, admitted to a therapist, his wife and/or Jesse's lawyer that he molested two boys previously and raped his own brother.

Another thing: I had the feeling that Arnold took the guilty plea not only because of possible "badgering" from other people and lawyers, but because he *knew* he was guilty of something. The actual boundaries of that something are now almost impossible to determine due to Arnold's shame-filled secrecy, the disturbed structures of the Friedman family, the failures of the police force and legal system (e.g. no physical evidence gathered, computer students were potentially intimidated into saying one thing rather than another, the judge's admission that she made up her mind before trial) and at this stage perhaps also the inherent unreliability of memory itself.

To me, something felt very off about David throughout the whole film. I think he has some very deep issues and is in denial about many things. He doesn't seem like a mentally stable person.
I agree with the opinion that he too was molested by his father as a child but repressed those memories or simply convinced himself that his childhood was normal. Just like his uncle who doesn't remember being raped by Arnold.

I wondered about David's understanding of his father's death as well. As a matter of fact, I questions David's understanding of many things concerning his family.

Not that David doesn't have a lot of issues which became evident as the doco progressed, I think that portion of the interview wasn't about the trial or allegations.
It started out as a doco about David being the most popular clown on the children's party circuit, so he obviously didn't think it appropriate to tell the truth and open a can of worms. Later, he changed his mind and revealed to the director who he and his family were, and the doco changed direction.
