i don't get it, if they are trying to hide that their from the future, what;s the point, not one will believe them

Because it adds story conflict.

It probably has to do with the fact that if too many people knew they would be bombarded with questions about the future, and they want people to find out about the future on their own. I think somewhere they mentioned that they were not supposed to tell anyone in the past about where they came from. But of course Phil told Keely.
