The mysterious no name group....

Why did they need Bruce Willis? As soon as they saw their information was at risk why did they freak out and force the Chief of Police to do their bidding. If they had pretended to be law enforcement, like when they pretended to be FBI, they could have gotten the job done without incident. They even joke that they may really be FBI which means there would be no reason to kidnapp his family. If they had pretended, like in the movie Sneakers to work in law, no one would have known until it was too late. I'm confused by antagonist in movies that use the most aggressive approach as possible. We know nothing about the group which means the ending in the film is unintentionally(?) ambiguous. I did enjoy the movie, I like all the devices used and played with. The logic though...

I know this is qyite a while later, but I just saw this (again) last night, so...

They "needed" him because he was their "in". Bruce was the local chief of police, had already appeared on TV and talked to the kidnappers/ home invaders. Using Bruce seemed easier than using fake/ real FBI guys. Maybe it wasn't the best plan, but it was their easiest way into the house.

I can't disagree with that. Making the group ambiguous was the logical solution, it's impossible to understand their tactical decisions.

I thought the same thing at first but now I have another theory. Kevin pollack was with the mob, so they probably were using Bruce Willis so neither pollack or his kids got hurt. Then when willis told them pollack was dead, they said the hell with it, we will burst in as fbi and get the disc, not caring if the kids got hurt in the process.

It does seem that Kevin Pollack is like Ben Kingsley's character in Sneakers. Just like that movie it seems the mob has indirect or even direct dealings with a government agent or agency. It seems it comes down to, there is not enough info, and you can't plan for random delinquents to cause chaos. Side note: After re watching the movie the young antagonist are from a town literally down the road from me. Its about a two your drive, if not more to where the movie takes place. I have no idea why they were in that town. When I heard that, their characterization is spot on. They come from a desert town know for its high crime rate and deviant behavior. Its the place you hope you never break down in, seriously.
